Northeast Weekend Getaways for Families: Bucket List Trips

Searching for Northeast weekend getaways for families that are actually worth the drive? You’re in the right place.

I got the idea for this blog after a visit to a cranberry bog in Massachusetts. It was magical. We were knee-deep in floating berries, learning how they’re picked (both wet and dry!). And I couldn’t stop thinking: why isn’t everyone talking about this?

That’s what you’ll find here: the trips that make your friends say “Wait, you can DO that?” The hidden gems, the iconic experiences, and the places that are worth it.

These Northeast getaways work for families with school-aged kids, but they also shine as multigenerational adventures. Invite grandma. Bring your favorite great aunt. These are the trips that give you serious cool-parent points and bring everyone closer together.

City Getaways

A family posing at an observation deck with the Empire State Building and NYC skyline behind them.

New York City

NYC is one of a kind. From iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building (we loved the interactive updates inside!) to tasty treats like testing rainbow bagels and pizza. Our favorite spots? Grand Central Station, Summit One, and iconic shops like the Harry Potter store and Times Square’s M&M’s World!

A family exploring a space exhibit at a computer station in a dimly lit room of the Air and Space Museum.

Washington DC

DC is a perfect place for curious kids. Our family loved the Smithosonian museums. The kids were literally skipping from spot to spot inside and testing every single touch-screen. And the White House tour was our best adventure! DC is an iconic East Coast city for a reason.

A family of four stands in front of the Liberty Bell with Independence Hall behind them.

Philadelphia, PA

We visited the city on the 4th of July. Talk about an experience! We got to see amazing historical sites like Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. (I was so moved it literally brought me to tears. A little corny, but true.) Plus, we hit up some unique spots too – The Museum of Illusions, the Rocky steps, and the prison where Al Capone stayed!

Outdoor Adventures & Scenic Drives

A girl in a blue poncho smiles next to a boat railing with Niagara Falls waterfalls in the background.

Niagara Falls, New York

As the first US state park, with the largest waterfalls North America, Niagara Falls is unforgettable.
View the falls from afar or ride right up to them on the Maid of the Mist boat. My kids giggled the whole time, especially when the grown-ups got wet alongside them! The colorful ponchos helped…mostly.

A family huddled together smiling at the top of Whiteface Mountain on rocks, with other mountains in the background.

Adirondacks, New York

This area of northern NY is your spot for outdoor adventure.

Craving mountain views? Whiteface Mountain is our top recommendation. No hiking required – just walk into a neat castle, then ride the elevator up to the peak. (Just be sure to pack a jacket, it’s chilly up there!)

While it’s great year-round, it excels around the topic of winter sports. From dogsledding on Lake Placid (yes, you family can do it!) to the quaint old-fashioned Olympic village and state-of-the-art event centers, you won’t be bored. We even got to see world-class athletes practicing!

A couple standing in front of a covered bridge and foliage in Vermont.

Vermont for the Covered Bridges

This is small-town New England at its best. Vermont is a great place
for a slower-paced weekend. Think relaxing drives, maple treats, and classic covered bridges. It’s perfect for reconnecting as a family.

A couple standing in front of a lighthouse smiling on a blue sunny day.

Cape Cod for the Lighthouses

Cape Cod is the sweetest stop with its charming coast and a lot of history. The drive alone by the ocean is worth it, but we loved climbing lighthouses too. The coolest one? The Highland Light, which was commissioned by George Washington! Fun fact: It even had to be moved because of erosion, and we learned all about it on the tour.

Amusement Parks & Water Parks

A family stands in front of a Hershey's Chocolate World display, with Twizzlers candy, and a sign with cartoon smiling grapes.

Hersheypark, Pennsylvania

One of the most loved amusement parks on the East Coast, Hershey Park is packed with rides for all ages and classic family fun. It’s super walkable, with really wide paths. We went with kids, cousins, and grandparents, and the park setup made it really easy to keep track of everyone. Plus, who doesn’t love chocolate treats?

Two girls stand in front of a giant indoor water slide and park area.

Great Wolf Lodge, Pennsylvania

When winter hits and cabin fever sets in, indoor water parks are the answer. Great Wolf Lodge delivers year-round family fun with slides, lazy rivers, and activities that keep everyone entertained. Insider tip: Try to go off-peak and during the week for great savings!

Beach Getaways

A mom and daughter smile while riding on a surrey bike on the boardwalk with the beach in the background.

Ocean City, Maryland

In the summertime it feels like everyone we know is looking for beautiful beaches. We settled on Ocean City, Maryland years ago and go back every year!

Its old-fashioned boardwalk and family-friendly vibe are so wholesome. The town has mini golf courses (x20 it feels like!), arcades, souvenir shops, and really easy beach access. You can even go nearby to Assateague Island and see the wild horses!

Historical Experiences

Two girls stand inside a lit coal mine with hard hats on.

Coal Mine Tour in Lackawanna, Pennsylvania

Looking for a truly unique experience? Ride a mine car 300 feet underground into a real coal mine! Put on a hard hat and see how miners (some as young as 8!) used to live and work. Our crew thought it was both a little spooky, and also thrilling, and they learned a ton. (And yes, canaries really were used back then!)

A man walks toward The Breakers mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, showcasing its grand architecture.

Newport Mansions, Rhode Island

Touring Newport’s historic mansions is like stepping into another era – a glamorous one. With cliff walks overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this stop blends history, fresh air, and jaw-dropping scenery. Plus it’s so neat to see how the rich (and their staff) lived long ago!
