Day Trips in Upstate NY for School Age Kids: Must-Do’s

You’re looking for day trips in Upstate NY for school-age kids (ages 5+) that feel worth it.

The kind where your whole family gets home saying, “That was actually a good day.”

I’ve been there. Scrolling. Second-guessing. Then staying home because planning felt too hard.

This page is your shortcut.

It helps you choose what kind of day you want, and shows you Upstate New York day trips that work best for kids this age.

Got nature lovers? Try Watkins Glen waterfalls. It’s one of the best state parks for waterfalls and wow-factor views. (It was my favorite as a kid, and our recent visit the kids loved it so much!)

Hands-on museums? The Corning Museum of Glass has amazing hot glass shows, and your kids can even make their own.

Looking for something a little unexpected? You’ll find that here too.

Why Trust Trip Idea Mom for Upstate NY Day Trips

I’m Amanda — a lifelong Upstate New Yorker and mom of two school-aged kids.

Every place on this list is somewhere I’ve personally been to. Often more than once. I pay attention to the details parents need: parking, timing, energy levels, food stops (including ice cream!) and if the kids actually had a great time.

My goal is simple: help you plan a great day without overthinking it.

Seasonal Day Trips in Upstate NY

Summer Day Trips

Looking up at a Ferris wheel on day with blue sky and white fluffy clouds.

The warmer months of summer make it an ideal time for outdoor fun.

  • Waterfalls & swimming holes
Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca has a waterfall swimming area bigger than anything we saw in Maui.
  • Blueberry picking
August is peak season. Frosty Mountain Blueberry Patch near Binghamton is our hometown go-to.
  • County & state fairs
Budget-friendly rides, food trucks, and carnival games often make fairs a great thing to do instead of a pricey amusement park. The Broome County Fair and NY State Fair are both worth the trip. (Our family’s favorite event? Watching the rodeo!)

Fall Day Trips

Crisp air, leaves changing colors, and cozy traditions.

  • Apple picking & festivals
New York is the second-largest apple producer in the U.S. Beak & Skiff (Lafayette, NY) even lets you pick your own!
  • Pumpkin farms & hayrides
Iron Kettle Farm’s themed pumpkin displays are always a hit. It’s one of our favorite family outings each year.
  • Corn mazes
Stoughton Farm changes maze themes yearly and has clues to find your way out that tweens love.
  • Cider mills & donuts
The Cider Mill in Endicott makes cider and donuts, and lets you watch! It’s educational and delicious.

Winter Day Trips

Cold weather doesn’t mean staying home, but it often means we’re on the hunt for fun day trips.

  • Dog sledding rides
Lake Placid is so much fun in the winter. Right off Main Street, there’s dog sledding on Mirror Lake, a Toboggan run, and so much more!
  • Snow tubing
Greek Peak in Cortland is an easy winter win. Plus, they’ve got an indoor water park there too!
  • Museums
The Rochester Museum of Play is perfect on snowy days. Plan for a full day, including indoor zip lining!
